Eastern mother, Western daughter: Was it a hysterectomy or an antihistamine?

The other morning my client and I were speaking of our mothers and the cultural differences between our generations. My mother, like hers, always, always wanted grandchildren. In my case, for many years, arguments ensued because I didn’t want children. The arguments were ferocious, and led to many odd moments.

My mom and I.

My mom and I.

For instance, years ago when I owned a supplement store I became very sick. It was nothing out of the ordinary, but enough that I went to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor instead of my normal physician because my ears were ringing. It was a combination of terrible allergies and a severe sinus infection. While there, the ENT sent me home with allergy medicine and an antihistamine.

After, when I went back to the shop to carry on with business the phone rang. I answered it. It was my mom. She asked how I was doing and I explained that I just came back from the doctor’s and was on an antihistamine. Then it happened. She exploded.

“Why you  do that to mama? Why? Why you do that to mama? Why you do that to your body?…Why you do that?”

She was screaming, and crying. With  her hysterics, I became hysterical. “What the hell are you talking about? Why are you yelling at me?” I asked but it was to the dead-end of a phone. She was gone, and I was at a complete loss of words.

It could not have been five minutes later when my dad called. He sounded concerned and asked, “Baby, did you have a hysterectomy? Your mother just called me to tell me you did.”

I lost all composure and started laughing. “No dad. I’m on an antihistamine. I told her that. I couldn’t understand why she was yelling at me.”

Then I heard my dad say, “Oh my god Cha Ya…” which is his usual statement during  times like this.
